Netflix have announced that they ordered a new Sonic series, “Sonic Prime”. The show, which will be 3D animated, is set to debut in 2022 on the streaming platform. It will be co-produced by SEGA (obviously), WildBrain Studios (the authors of the critically-acclaimed “Carmen Sandiego” revival) and Man of Action (“Ben 10”, “Big Hero 6: The Series”). According to Variety, the series will consist of 24 episodes, which will see “Sonic in an adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands — and also represents a “journey of self-discovery and redemption” for the speedy, blue spiny mammal”.
After the beloved (though slightly obnoxious to my liking) hedgehog’s successful run in the cinemas in early 2020 (before this whole COVID situation), it’s understandable Hollywood wants to cash in on the franchise. With the names of the studios attached to the project, however, one can be hopeful “Sonic Prime” will not be just an easy cash grab.
