Some time ago, Warner Bros. has published a new trailer for „Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)”. You can already say this is going to be a ground-breaking film, and for several reasons. Firstly, this will be the first female team-up superhero film in history. Secondly, a very talented Cathy Yan, the author of “Dead Pigs”, directed it, which means this will be the first superhero film by an Asian female director. And thirdly, this is a film with a very strong female spirit also because of its writer, Christina Hodson. And you can’t say it’ not high time.

“Birds of Prey” will tell the story of the titular team of Gotham City superheroines teaming-up with Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). As the trailer suggests, Harley will break up with the Joker and go out of one mess straight into another. She’ll face off with a Roman Sionis, also known as Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Together with other Gothamites who are also at war with him — Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) — she will bring the fight to the gangster.

As you can see in the trailer, the creators prepared an aesthetically sophisticated, crazy ride with a dose of feminist themes. There is going to be a lot of rampages, original sense of humour and comic book references (those who are observant will notice some allusions to “Harley Quinn” by the amazing Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti). The film has been rated R, which means the director and the writer were not limited creatively. And this is very good news.
