Cruella arrives in a crazy trailer

Disney has released the trailer for “Cruella”. It’s another one of these live-action versions of the evil corporation’s animated features. But instead of a shot-by-shot remake, we’ll get more of a villain origin story in the vein of “Maleficent”. The film will be directed by “I, Tonya’s” Craig Gillespie and it looks like Disney gave him quite a lot of creative freedom. The trailer promises a fresh, punk rock tale that’s narratively inventive and original. Check it out!

A nice change after “Aladdin” (which has none of Guy Ritchie creative stamp and I just can’t believe it) and “Mulan”, huh? “Cruella” is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on May 28, 2021. Emma Stone stone plays the title role. Those will be hard shoes to fill after Glenn Close’s take on the character in live-action “101 dalmatians” as well as the brilliant Victoria Smurfit in “Once Upon a Time”. But if anyone can pull it off, Emma Stone is this person. Opposite Stone, we’ll see Emma Thompson as Baroness Von Hellman, Joel Fry as Jasper Badun, Paul Walter Hauser as Horace Badun, Emily Beecham as Anita, Mark Strong as Boris, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Tabitha and Jamie Demetriou as Gerald. Here’s the official synopsis:

“Cruella” is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
